What’s causing my cough?

Coughing is how the body removes foreign material or mucus from the lungs or upper airway. Because coughing is a symptom, not a root cause, productive coughing can be helpful in clearing mucus from the respiratory system. In the case of a productive cough, the cause can often be a viral infection like the common cold in which the cough is triggered by mucus draining down the throat. Non-productive coughs (dry, hacking coughs in which no mucus is produced) can follow viral illnesses, and can also be the result of allergies, spasms in the bronchial tubes or asthma.

Could I have allergies?

Seasonal allergy symptoms often include swollen nasal passages and/or post nasal drip, both of which can result in throat irritation and coughing. Environmental factors like air quality can also aggravate the throat and cause irritation. If you have a sore throat or cough, being in places with lots of smoke, dust or other airborne irritants is probably a bad idea.
